On November 21, 2019, in London (the UK), the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Sergey Rumas held a meeting with the management of BKM Holding (Belkommunmash) Vladimir Korol and CAD CAM Automotive Martin Wheeler. The meeting was organized as a part of the working visit of Prime Minister S. Rumas to the UK to participate in EBRD Eastern Partnership (EaP) Investment Summit.

Within the framework of the summit an official ceremony of signing the Agreement between BKM Holding and CAD CAM Automotive on the organization of joint assembly production of electric buses in the UK was held.

Even now, the UK has the largest ultra-low emission vehicle market among the countries of the European Union and the fourth largest in the world. The British Government plans to completely switch to public transport with zero emissions by 2050. Thus, the signing of this Agreement is a strategic step to further promotion of Belarusian electric buses to the UK market.

BKM Holding already has experience in the production of electric buses for left-driving countries.

In October 2019, during the large transport exhibition “COACH and BUS UK” (Birmingham) the first right-hand drive model E4200P manufactured by BKM Holding was presented. The electric bus aroused interest among the representatives of transport operators and the regional administrations of England, including the Departments for Transport in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Nottingham, Birmingham, and other cities of the UK.

The electric bus is currently undergoing certification tests to ensure access to public roads in the UK.

At the end of 2019, the official launch of the trial operation of the electric bus on one of the routes in Nottingham is planned. The trial operation of this electric bus is also being considered in other cities of the UK.

Subject to the organization of sustainable sales in the framework of the joint production of BKM Holding and CAD CAM, assembly volumes can reach up to 300 units per year.

For reference:

The UK Government has announced plans for electric vehicles implementation – by 2040 it is planned to ban the sale of the vehicles with NGV fuel. London will decommission single-deck buses using NGV fuel by the end of 2020. Zero Emissions zones will appear in a number of large cities in the coming years, for entry into which a substantial fee will be charged from conventional vehicles. British Prime Minister B. Johnson announced the implementation plan for a pilot project to launch exclusively electric public transport in one of the UK cities.

In general, the British Government is developing plans to stimulate the population of British cities to use public transport instead of persona vehicles. Along with this, measures are being taken to develop electrical technologies, including financing of research and development, creating a national battery production, and investing in international joint projects.

During the Zero Emission Summit, organized by the UK Government in September 2018 in Birmingham, Belarus became one of the 12 countries that supported and signed the final Declaration of the Summit. The Declaration implies the active cooperation of participating countries in reducing emissions through the implementation of electric transport and the development of appropriate infrastructure.
